Barulho D’água (Noise in the Water) not only tells the tragedy of thousands of refugees who mostly died crossing the Mediterranean Sea: The few who succeeded in crossing are identified by numbers, such as the shy Tunisian immigrant who struggles to raise her eyes when narrating the drama she and others endured at the fury of the sea. The author stays true to the essential characteristics of what he heard and saw in Mazara del Vallo at the Seat of San Vito Onlus, an Italian town that stretches towards the African coast.
